The Least Forgiving Surface We Clean
Glass tile is one of the most common upgrades on newer and remodeled San Diego County pools, especially in coastal neighborhoods from La Jolla down to Del Mar. It is also the surface where a wrong cleaning method does the most permanent damage.
Scratches and haze on glass tile do not buff out. They are in the surface, visible from across a yard, and they get worse with every attempt to fix them. The cleaning has to be right the first time.
What Damages Glass
Pumice stones grind calcium off tile by abrasion. On glass, they leave a permanent haze that worsens with each scrubbing. Homeowners who have tried pumice once often call us because the tile looks worse after than before.
Acid washing dissolves calcium carbonate chemically, but it can etch or cloud glass tile. It also does almost nothing to calcium silicate, the harder gray buildup that forms over several seasons without cleaning.
Media blasting lifts calcium off physically at low pressure. No grinding, no chemicals, no contact that alters the glass surface.
Glass gets the gentlest setting we run. The media and pressure are selected for glass specifically before anything touches the surface.
How We Clean Glass Tile
We assess the glass tile before starting: deposit type, thickness, and whether there is any existing damage from a prior cleaning. The equipment is then calibrated for glass specifically, with a finer media and lower pressure than we would use on stone or porcelain.
